Obituary for Merle Smith

Guntown - Merle Wayne Smith, 71, died Friday, March 2, 2012, at the North Mississippi Center. He was born in Lee County on March 1, 1941 to Wesley and Clester Vivian Braden Smith. Earlier in his life, he had served in the Mississippi Army National Guard and participated in the integration at The University of Mississippi after President Kennedy nationalized the Mississippi Guard in 1962. He was retired from Stanley Hardware. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Saltillo, an avid Nascar fan and enjoyed watching his grandchildren play ball.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 5, 2012, at The Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Terry Myhand officiating. Burial will be in Campbelltown Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Gwen Watson Smith of the Euclatubba Community; one son, LiMerle Smith (Casey) of Guntown, one step-daughter, Dawn Young (Joe) of Guntown; three sisters, Frances Daugherty (Max) of Tupelo, Opal Patton (Clyde Lane) of Guntown and Virginia Moreland of Amory; two brothers, Charles Smith (Wilma) of Guntown and Billy Ray Smith (Deloris) of Sherman; four grandchildren, J.P. Young (Fiancee, Erica White), Kyle Young, Emary and Jaxon Smith; and one great granddaughter, Ivia Grace Presley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Gladys Smith; and two brothers, Wesley and J. V. Smith.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Steve, Ricky, Nicky and Danny Ray Smith, Mike Baughman, Rodney, Jeff and Phil Patterson and Paul Turner, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Hill, James Bailey, Will Robinson, J. P. Young, Kyle Young, Jaxon Smith and Pat Carr.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2012 at the Saltillo Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may be left at www.peguesfuneralhome.com
