Tupelo - Peggy Marlene Edwards Johnson, 78, died Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at The North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. A Tupelo native, she was born July 19, 1933, to Cecil E. and Jessie Gregg Edwards. She attended school in West Point, graduating with honors in 1953. She married Roger Johnson on March 12, 1959, in West Point. They spent the first two years of their marriage in The Philippine Islands where her husband was in Army Security. She loved spending quality time with her grandchildren, talking, reading, and playing games with them. She was an avid reader and always encouraged her children and grandchildren to experience the joy and knowledge that comes from reading. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Maranatha Sunday School Class. She was an active member of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary and Meals on Wheels. Before retiring, she served 25 years as financial secretary of First Presbyterian Church of Tupelo. She was previously employed by North Mississippi Industrial Development Association of West Point, The Memphis Chamber of Commerce in Memphis, Tenn., Mississippi Extension Service at Mississippi State University and Mississippi State Employment Service in Grenada

Services will 2 p.m. Friday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Ricky Young officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.

Survivors include her husband, Roger Johnson of Tupelo; three daughters, Gale Johnson Smith of Tupelo, Julie Johnson Whitehead (Howard) of Round Rock, Tex., Heather Johnson Camp (Dr. William Camp) of Lexington, Ky. ; four granddaughters, Sarah Kate Johnson of Round Rock, Tex., Molly Elizabeth Smith of Tupelo, Christian Isabeau Camp of Lexington, Ky., Callie Marie Spivey (Kyle) of Saltillo; one grandson, Charles William Camp of Lexington, Ky., one great-grandson, Britton Joel Spivey; sisters-in-law and brother-in law, Frances White of Saltillo, Donald and Ora Johnson of Columbus, Dorothy Johnson of West Point, and Hazel Johnson Pearson of Raleigh, N.C.; several cousins and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Charles Earl Edwards and James Durrell Edwards; two sisters, Joyce Edwards Wade and June Edwards Drummond; her grandparents Charles Lewis and Callie Boatner Gregg and John Hampton and Molly Taylor Edwards.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m Thursday at the funeral home.
